Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

March 21, 2013

As the Ontario Hockey League playoffs begin, we begin a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history. Enjoy!

Sunday, March 21, 2004

Twice the Kingston Frontenacs lead the hockey game but twice they fail to hold it as the Barrie Colts claim a 5-4 win in Game 3 of a first-round series in Barrie. The win gives the Colts a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven conference quarter-final.

Kingston, which lost only one of four regular-season meetings with the Colts in the regular year, took the lead for the first time in the series when Eric Himelfarb scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway in the second minute of the game. Two goals two minutes apart midway through the second period, one scored by Himelfarb, the other set up by him, gave Kingston a 3-1 lead but that was gone three minutes later when B.J. Crombeen and Andrew Shennan scored goals for the Colts just 47 seconds apart.

After Barrie took a 4-3 lead, Evan Kotsopoulos scored for Kingston to tie the game with a little more than 10 minutes left in the third period but the Frontenacs couldn’t sustain it as Barrie pumped 22 shots in the final 20 minutes at Kingston goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu, who faced 51 shots in the game.

Dan McDonald scored the other goal for Kingston, which ended the game with nine forwards still looking for their first point of the series.
