Junior Grenadiers bow to Mississauga

June 30, 2013

Mississauga Warriors kept their perfect junior varsity record intact through five games Saturday as they defeated the Kingston Grenadiers 28-8 in an Ontario Varsity Football League game at Loyalist Collegiate.

The loss was the fifth in six games for the Grenadiers, who trailed14-1 at the break, the only point a single by Cameron Hebert off a missed 36-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half.

Hebert also converted Kingston’s only touchdown, by Nick Westendorp, on a 16-yard pass from Brendan Steele in the fourth quarter, and he had a strong game defensively, with two quarterback sacks and two pass breakups.

Cole Goodfellow was the main offensive threat for the Grens, gaining 70 yards along the ground on 12 carries before he left the game with an injury in the third quarter.

Steele finished the game with 14 completions from 25 pass attempts for 139 yards, the touchdown and one interception. He came into the game in relief after Tanner DeJong went 2-for-11 with an interception.

Tim Bonsall led Kingston receivers with five catches, for 39 yards.

The varsity and bantam Grenadiers each had a bye this weekend. This Saturday the junior varsity team will host the Niagara Spears at, 1 p.m., at Loyalist, the middle game of a tripleheader that will begin with the bantam Grens, 1-4, hosting the 2-3 Metro Toronto Wildcats at 11 a.m. The varsity Grenadiers will put their unblemished 5-0 record on the line at 4 o’clock when they host the Wildcats, who are also 2-3.
