Local men vying for national senior B lacrosse title

August 26, 2013

Two Kingston men are with the Capital Region Axemen this week as they play for the President’s Cup at the annual Canadian senior B lacrosse championship tournament.

Kingston native Tim Bergin has been with the Axemen all season. An original member of the Kingston Cavaliers who also played junior B in Gloucester, Bergin led Capital Region in scoring this year with 60 points in 14 games.

A university field lacrosse player with the Carleton Ravens, Bergin was fourth in Quebec Senior Lacrosse League scoring in the regular season and he led the league in playoff scoring with 26 points in five games.

Current Kingston Kings coach Mike Dube joined the Axemen for four regular-season games and he had 13 points in the playoffs, tied for second on the team.

Capital Region was swept in three games of the league final by the Kahnawake Mohawks but since Kahnawake is hosting the President’s Cup tournament, both Quebec finalists were assured entry.

The Axemen begin play today against the Onandaga Redhawks of the Can/Am league.

The seven-team, round-robin tournament is one of the most greulling competitions in lacrosse. After a six-game preliminary round, the top four teams advance into a single-elimination playoff round, meaning the two finalists will play eight games in seven days.

Capital Region will play two games Tuesday, in the morning against Caughnawaga of the Iroquois Lacrosse league and at 5 p.m. against the Calgary Mountaineers.

The other competing teams are the St. Catharines Saints and Nanaimo Timbermen.
