Kingston’s Tim Bergin leads Axemen to President’s Cup victory

August 27, 2013

Kingston minor lacrosse product Tim Bergin scored a goal and added four assists Monday as the Ottawa-based Capital Region Axemen posted a 13-12 win over the Onondaga Redhawks in first-round play at the President’s Cup lacrosse tournament, the national senior B championship, in Kahnawake.

Mike Dube, the former Kitchener major series player who now coaches the Kingston Kings junior C club, had four assists in the winning effort.

Capital Region scored the game’s first four goals and led 4-0 after just six minutes of play but the Axemen trailed 8-7 going into the third period.

Bergin’s goal early in the third period tied the game 9-9. After Onondaga answered just 30 seconds later to regain a one-goal lead, Capital Region scored four straight goals, three of them in a span of 85 seconds midway through the period. Bergin assisted on a goal by Greg Rogowski that proved to be the game-winner.

Today the Axemen, finalists in the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League, have two games in the seven-team, round-robin schedule. They will play the Caughnawaga Indians, champions of the Iroquois Lacrosse Association, at 11 a.m. At 5 o’clock they will meet the Alberta-champion Calgary Mountaineers.
