Gaels suffer 1-0 shootout defeat against Western at OUA women’s soccer tournament

November 2, 2013

A shootout victory got the Queen’s Golden Gaels to the Ontario University Athletics women’s soccer championship tournament. A shootout defeat has relegated them to Sunday’s bronze-medal match.

The Gaels bowed 1-0 Friday night to the No. 1-ranked Western Mustangs after they were edged 3-2 in a shootout. They’ll play the Carleton Ravens, also a 1-0 loser after a shootout Friday to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Sunday morning for the bronze medal.

Queen’s, which won the national championship in 2010 and 2011 and was the Canadian silver medalist last year, posted seven shutouts during the regular year and blanked Laurentian 6-0 and East division regular-season champion Ottawa 1-0 in its previous two playoff games.

Against Ottawa, Kingston’s Brittany Almeida scored the decisive goal as the Gaels prevailed 3-2 in the fifth round of the shootout. This time, however, the Gaels’ hopes died with Almeida, as her shot in the fifth round eluded the Western goalkeeper but hit the cross-bar.

Already leading the shootout 3-2, the Mustangs didn’t need their fifth shot.

Micah Vermeer and Alexis McKinty scored in the shootout for Queen’s, which suffered its first loss on the road this year. Riley Filion and Melissa Jung failed. Undefeated Western, 11-0-5 in the regular year, scored on its first three shots and hit the cross-bar with its fourth.
