Regi, La Salle, among top seeds at OFSAA girls basketball tournaments

November 20, 2013

Both Kingston teams bound for Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls basketball tournaments this week have been seeded among the top teams in their respective fields.

The Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers, the Kingston Area champions and eastern Ontario AAA title holders, are seeded fifth for the triple-A tournament in London. The Panthers will begin play Thursday at 7 p.m. against 15th-seeded St. Basil of Sault Ste. Marie in what will be Regi’s only game of the day.

St. Basil was the OFSAA double-A champion in 2010.

Two-time defending champion St. Mary’s of Hamilton, the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference representative, is the tournament’s top-seeded team. Before it began that run, St. Mary’s won the 2010 quad-A championship.

St. John’s College of Brantford is the tournament’s second seed, while Louis-Riel of Gloucester, the province’s triple-A champion 2009-10, is the No. 3 seed for the three-day, 16-team tournament that ends Saturday.

The last Kingston-area team to win the OFSAA AAA title was the Holy Cross Crusaders, who won the championship in Ottawa in 2002.

The La Salle Black Knights, meanwhile, the KASSAA finalists and eastern Ontario AA champions, are seeded sixth in the 16-team double-A tournament in Windsor. The Knights, one of two La Salle teams at the competition — the other is from Sudbury — will play St. Theresa of Belleville Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

If the Knights win that game, they’ll resume play Friday afternoon. If they lose, they’ll have a second game Thursday, at 7:30 p.m.

Welland Centennial begins play as the tournament’s No. 1 seed, while defending Ontario champion St. Francis of St. Catharines and General Amherst of Amherstburg, the 2011 OFSAA AA champion, are seeded 2-3, respectively.

No Kingston team has won the provincial AA championship. The last eastern Ontario team to do so was Thousand Islands of Brockville, which won it three years in a row, 1994-96.
