Gaels oust Ottawa with last-minute goal

February 22, 2014

Queen’s Golden Gaels won their first Ontario University Athletics hockey playoff series in five years Friday night when they defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1.

A goal by Braeden Corbeth with just 23 seconds left in the third period gave Queen’s the win and a two-game sweep of the best-of-three first-round series. The Gaels will now wait to see who survives the other three East division quarter-finals to learn who their next opponent will be.

For Corbeth, the ex-Belleville Bull who had four goals and 15 points during the regular year in his sophomore campaign with the Gaels, it was his first goal in eight games.

Playing in Ottawa, Corey Bureau opened scoring for Queen’s in the game’s seventh minute. Guillaume Donovan, on a power play at 1:42 of the seecond period, tied the game for Ottawa and that’s how the score remained into the final minute of regulation time.

Kevin Bailie made 32 saves for the goaltending win, as Queen’s was outshot by the home team 33-22, including 16-8 in the second period. In winning both games of the series, Bailie surrendered just three goals.

The teams split 16 minor penalties and each had six opportunities to play with a man advantage.
