Volleyball Gaels announce three recruits

April 11, 2014

Three players who have already fashioned distinguished athletic resumes have committed to play volleyball and study at Queen’s University.

Outside hitters Ben Harper and Dylan Hunt and setter Joraver Sanga will join the Gaels for the 2014-15 Ontario University Athletics season.

Harper, from Ottawa, helped Lisgar Collegiate to a bronze medal at this spring’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA championship. He has also been a tournament all-star at the Canadian under-16 open championship.

He has been admitted to the School of Business.

“Ben’s athleticism, his focus, his determination, his leadership and his superior skills make him an obvious standout,” Gaels coach Brenda Willis said, in a release. Harper’s transition this year from middle to outside hitter “was seamless,” she added.

“It became very clear the ceiling for Ben would be extremely high.”

By the way, Harper is the son of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Hunt, 6-foot-7, will graduate this spring from Sacred Heart Collegiate in Newmarket. He plays club volleyball for the Aurora Storm, and has helped his team to two provincial titles. He’s also a member of the Ontario under-18 beach volleyball team.

“Not only does he play extremely high,” Willis said, “he has above-average ball control for an athlete his size, and what sold me more than anything is his composure and leadership.”

Hunt will be studying physical and health education.

Sangha, from Brampton, is involved in both beach and indoor provincial team programs and is a member of the reigning provincial champion beach team. His team from Mississauga Secondary School won the bronze medal at quad-A OFSAA in March.

“We were looking for a setter who is deceptive, smart, calm and can hold his own blocking,” Willis said. “Joraver is all of those things and more.”

Sangha will be studying engineering.
