Strong comeback falls short as Impact bows in opening game of provincial championship tourney

April 26, 2014

Kingston Impact played perhaps its most disciplined game of the year Friday night — in all respects but one.

Sadly for the Impact, that shortcoming — failure to capitalize from the free-throw line — cost them a victory in the opening round of the Ontario Basketball bantam boys championship tournament.

Collectively the Impact made just six of 30 foul shots as they dropped a 36-27 decision to the Oakville Venom at Frontenac Secondary School on the first day of the three-day event.

Kingston had a good start — the Impact held Oakville to just three points in the first quarter — and staged a strong finish, closing a 14-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to just three points with two minutes to play in the game. Committing just five fouls in the entire contest, the Impact played what coach Mike Chapman called their most disciplined game of the year.

It was the other side of that coin that betrayed the home team, however, as even 50 per cent shooting from the free-throw line would have put them in a tie game.

Kingston’s stirring comeback fell short after the Impact closed to within three points, 30-27, in the closing minutes of play. A turnover and a poor shot led to an Oakville basket that bumped the lead back to five points. After missing yet two more free throws, the Impact tried to turn the ball over with a press but it backfired, as the visitors scored twice in the final 20 seconds for the nine-point victory.

Kingston will play its next game at noon Saturday, also at Frontenac. The Impact is one of eight teams in Division 10 of the mammoth 102-team tournament, being held at 11 facilities across the city.
