Kings drop preseason opener

May 3, 2014

Kingston Kings spent the whole game coming back Friday night but ultimately they never made it all the way as they dropped a 12-9 decision to the Gloucester Griffins in exhibition junior lacrosse play at Centre 70.

Four times in the first period Gloucester took a one-goal lead and four times the Kings came back to tie. Twice in the third period the visitors enjoyed a three-goal advantage and Kingston ralled to within one at 8-7 and 10-9 but two goals in the final three minutes of the game clinched the victory for the Griffins, in a game where the home team never once held the lead.

Josh O’Connell led Gloucester with three goals and three assists. David Plots, the league’s most gentlemanly player last year, had a goal and five assists and Simon Mertick had two goals and two assists. Matt Lewis and Ryan Lafranchise, with two goals apiece, and Zack O’Gorman scored the other Giffins goals.

Rookie Cain Brown, playing his first junior game, had three goals and two assists for Kingston. Zach Masterson also scored twice for the Kings, both in the first eight minutes of the game, while Kaleb Bingley, Liam Brick, Jonah Lewis and Josh Smith shared the others.

Nic McFarlane started the game in goal for the Kings and surrendered four goals in the first period. Former Brockville goalie Lucas Houle allowed the other eight goals, four in each of the last two periods.

Kingston outshot Gloucester 51-30.

The teams will play a rematch Saturday afternoon in Ottawa, 3 p.m., at Earl Armstrong Arena. The Kings will open their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League schedule Thursday against the defending division champion Celtics in Cornwall.
