Regi ends season as only unbeaten senior girls soccer team

May 13, 2014

Marie-Rivier Dragons will get their crack at the Holy Cross Crusaders after all.

The Dragons, who ended their Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls soccer season Monday with a 5-1 win over the Ernestown Eagles, won the last four games they played, outscoring their opponents 20-1 in the process.

The only blemish in their splendid finish was a game the Dragons forfeited last week to Holy Cross in the penultimate game of their regular schedule.

Now, with their 4-3 record, the Dragons will face the second-place Crusaders in a quarter-final game Wednesday.

Holy Cross closed the season with its sixth win in seven games, 2-0 over the Frontenac Falcons, thanks to goals by Marilyn Doherty and Sabrina Goncalves.

Elsewhere on the final day of the regular season, the La Salle Black Knights blanked the Bayridge Blazers 3-0; the Kingston Blues thumped the Napanee Golden Hawks 9-3; the Loyalist Lancers shaded the Granite Ridge Gryphons 1-0, and the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers capped an undefeated season with a 7-1 win over the Sydenham Golden Eagles.

Evie Streight and Alex Wiley scored two goals apiece as KC, 5-2, claimed third place. Kaya Anyoti, Joelle Malcolm, Teagan Robertson, Mario Tsinaridis and Heidi Scott shared the other goals for the Blues, who will face Sydenham in the quarter-finals.

After a 3-0 start, the Golden Eagles closed the year by losing three of their last four games.

Bridget Mulholland scored two goals for Regi as the Panthers, 7-0, ended the campaign as the league’s only unbeaten team. Kaitlyn Balfour, Emily Rowsell, Zoe Tremblay, Holly Kintsler and Paola Finizio scored the other Regi goals. The Panthers will host Loyalist, 3-4, in a quarter-final match Wednesday.

In Wednesday’s other quarter-final game, La Salle will play Frontenac. Both teams finished the year 4-2-1, and their regular-season meeting ended in a scoreless draw.
