Kings ready to open at home

May 15, 2014

Kingston Kings will open the home portion of their 2014 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season Thursday night at Centre 70 against the Gloucester Griffins.

Game time is 8 o’clock.

The Kings split their first two games on the road, losing 10-2 in Cornwall last Thursday and winning 17-11 in Gloucester on Friday. Kingston showed remarkable resolve in the victory, overcoming an early 4-1 deficit and weathering a storm early in the third period, after the Griffins scored four straight goals to cut a six-goal gap to 13-11 with nine minutes to play.

In that game, Josh Smith tied an all-time team record with seven goals. Set in 1973 and matched the following year, that mark remained unassailable until Smith tied it against the same Gloucester team last July.

In his last two games against the Griffins, Smith has 14 goals and 19 points.

The Kings have fared better against Gloucester than any other opponent. Since the Griffins joined the league in 2011, Kingston has won 12 of 14 meetings and the Kings are undefeated at home in five games.

Gloucester, meanwhile, comes to Centre 70 having lost 31 straight games. Despite three wins in the last two years over the Kings in exhibition play, the Griffins haven’t won a league or playoff game since they defeated Kingston, 12-7, June 27, 2012.
