Crusaders reach both senior soccer finals

May 21, 2014

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers are on their way to their seventh consecutive Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls soccer final Thursday, thanks to a 5-0 semifinal victory Tuesday over the Frontenac Falcons.

The Panthers broke open a one-goal game with four goals in the second half.

Regi, 7-0 in the regular year and 9-0 overall, will face the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tindall Field at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The Crusaders earned their berth in the final with an 8-2 win over the Kingston Blues.

Alison Dodwell scored twice for Holy Cross, while Ashley MacDonald, Marilyn Doherty, Devan Anderson, Sydney DeLonghi, Diana McDonald and Cedar Golle shared the others.

The conference final will be a rematch of the Fr. Stan Memorial game, where Regi pinned the only loss of the season on the Crusaders, a 3-2 setback.

The senior boys final, 3:30 Thursday on the Queen’s University upper West Campus field, will pit Holy Cross against KC. The Crusaders eliminated the Sydenham Golden Eagles Tuesday with a 3-1 victory, while KC edged Frontenac 3-2.

Playing at West Campus, Brayden Roy headed a bouncing ball off a corner kick for the first Holy Cross goal and Eric Freitas scored twice after that as the Crusaders defeated Sydenham for the second time this year. C.J. O’Connor scored the only goal for the Golden Eagles.

The ending was more dramatic in the other semifinal, where KC prevailed in a shootout. The Blues scored on four of their five shots, while the Falcons missed the net once, scored three times and then were denied by Blues goalkeeper Pierre Boucher on their final attempt.

Mark Lappan capitalized on a Frontenac turnover to score the game’s first goal, just before halftime. Goals by Rodrigo Barreto and Brandon Raymond gave Frontenac a 2-1 lead before a late goal by KC’s Ben Posthumus sent the game into extra time, which was scoreless.

When the two finalists met in the regular year, Holy Cross edged KC 3-2 on April 28.
