June 30, 2014

Cole Goodfellow scored three touchdowns Saturday to lead the Kingston Grenadiers to a 42-0 victory over the York-Simcoe Bucs in an Ontario Varsity Football League varsity game in Newmarket.

It was a splendid day for Goodfellow, who had touchdown runs of 42 and 51 yards among 106 rushing yards. He later added a TD reception from backup quarterback Tanner DeJong for an 18-yard score.

It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Grenadiers, who improved to 4-2 and find themselves in a tie with the Cornwall Wildcats for second place in the East division of the Wettges Conference, two games behind the undefeated Ottawa Myers Riders.

Cornwall kept pace with the Grenadiers by defeating the Oshawa Hawkeyes 48-19 on Saturday.

The Grenadiers also got touchdowns form Liam Brand, on a seven-yard run; Jeremy Pendergast, on an eight-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Fisher, and David Hron, on a 51-yard return of an intercepted pass. Terrance Edgley kicked four converts.

Brand had eight carries for 89 yards for Kingston, which played without running back Konner Burtenshaw. Fisher completed 14 of 21 passes for 107 yards with Harris McEachern his favourite target, catching six balls for 52 yards.

York-Simcoe fell to 2-3.

In junior varsity play Saturday, Kingston slipped to 2-3 as they bowed 21-14 to York-Simcoe, while the bantam Grenadiers improved to 2-3 with their second win in a row, 43-7 over winless York-Simcoe.

The varsity Grens will take this week off and resume play Saturday, July 12, when the Oshawa Hawkeyes will visit Loyalist Collegiate. Next week, the bantam and junior varsity Grenadiers will both play the Toronto Thunder at Mary Ward Secondary School in Scarborough.
