Kate Gillis scores as Canada finishes seventh in Commonwealth Games field hockey

August 1, 2014

Malaysia outscored Canada 3-0 in a shootout Thursday night and claimed a 3-2 win in the game for seventh place at the Commonwealth Games women’s field hockey tournament in Glasgow.

Malaysia, 0-3-1 in preliminary play, scored with less than five minutes to play in regulation time to tie the game 2-2. For the Malaysians, the 21st-ranked team in the world, it was their first win in the tournament.

With the loss, Canada, 22nd ranked in the world, finished eighth in the 10-team competition, in a draw that included three of the world’s top six teams, five of the top 13 and eight of the top 22.

The Canadians led 1-0 at halftime. Seven minutes after Malaysia tied the game midway through the second half, Kingston’s Kate Gillis scored in the game’s 55th minute to restore the one-goal lead.

Canada, 1-3 in preliminary play, failed on all three of its penalty strokes in the shootout, while Malaysia was perfect with its three shots. Neither Brienne Stairs, who scored Canada’s other goal Thursday — and led the team with three goals in the tournament — nor Gillis, who scored twice, took a shot in the shootout, as the Canadian team instead pinned its hopes on three players who hadn’t scored in five games.
