Grenadiers’ season ends in 48-41 loss at Ottawa

August 11, 2014

Kingston Grenadiers’ Ontario Varsity Football League schedule ended in the blaze of a shootout Saturday night in Nepean, where the Ottawa Myers Riders edged the Grenadiers 48-41 in the Wettges Conference varsity championship game.

Jeremy Pendergast had a spectacular game for Kingston, catching 12 passes — three of them for touchdowns — for 234 yards. His scores came on plays of 76, 29 and 17 yards.

Liam Brand, on a one-yard run, and Harris McEachern, on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Fisher, scored the other Kingston touchdowns.

Mike Bashall kicked field goals of 27 and 20 yards, as well as three converts. He also caught a pass from Fisher for a two-point convert.

Fisher completed 28 of 53 passes for 440 yards, with four touchdown throws but two interceptions. One of them was returned 61 yards by Daniel Barker for an Ottawa touchdown; the other, by Jordan Gorgichuk, was brought back 40 yards.

The G-Men also lost three fumbles.

Ottawa quarterback Mathew Duffy completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Krzaniak caught two of those TD tosses, among the seven balls he caught for 71 yards. Jaegar Prot led the Riders receivers with nine catches for 123 yards.

Neither team had much of a ground game, with the Grenadiers managing just 80 yards rushing — of 20 carries, 11 went for two yards or less, and Fisher was the best with 25 yards from two carries. The Riders gained 130 yards from 22 attempts.

The Grenadiers, who had won six of their seven previous games, finished the year 8-4. They began and ended the season with losses to the Riders, who opened the campaign with a 51-18 victory in May.

Ottawa will advance to the league championship game against the winner of Sunday night’s Adam conference final in Windsor, where the Essex Ravens are hosting the Cambridge Lions. Essex was 7-1 in the regular year, while Cambridge finished 6-2.
