Top seeds all advance in senior girls basketball playoffs

November 5, 2014

Regiopolis Notre Dame’s senior girls basketball juggernaut continues to roll, as the Panthers began Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association playoffs with a 48-29 quarter-final win Tuesday over the Kingston Blues.

Playing at home, the undefeated Panthers started slowly but took control of the game early in the second half.

“(We) ran very well,” Regi coach Lesley Stevenson wrote in an email. “Excellent attacking of the paint allowed some good outside looks but the ball didn’t drop as well as it normally does.”

KC’s outside shooting, she wrote, kept the Blues in the game.

“We played great defence inside for the most part, so the post players struggled getting the ball and finding the hoop,” Stevenson wrote. “They fought til the end.”

Nine of 12 Panthers scored, led by Bridget Mulholland, who scored 16 points. The Blues, who were 9-1 in senior B play and began play Thursday as the eighth seed, got eight points from Evie Streight.

The top seeds all advanced out of Tuesday’s quarter-finals. The Loyalist Lancers, the other B division team in the tournament and the playoffs’ seventh seed, bowed 64-31 to the Holy Cross Crusaders, the La Salle Black Knights defeated the Bayridge Blazers 36-23 and the Frontenac Falcons narrowly got past the Sydenham Golden Eagles, 40-38.

Regi will host Frontenac in one semifinal and Holy Cross will entertain La Salle in the other, with both games scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday. The winners will meet for the county championship Monday, 7 p.m., at the Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation Centre.
