Mike Moore, Jason Shamatutu named to OUA all-rookie football team

November 11, 2014

Though the Queen’s Golden Gaels likely started as many freshmen throughout the Ontario University Athletics football season as any team in the league, just two of them found spots on the conference’s all-rookie team, announced Tuesday.

The two unquestionably deserved the recognition.

Linebacker Mike Moore, who played his high school football at St. Michael’s College and the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., played from the opening game of the year. He was 15th in the nation among all players with 48.5 tackles. He was 18th overall with 38 solo tackles. He also intercepted a pass and forced two fumbles.

Likewise, Jason Shamatutu, a cornerback from Port Coquitlam, B.C., played from the start. He had 33.5 tackles, 61st in the land, and his 28 solo tackles ranked him 50th in Canada. He also intercepted two passes.

Other than that, the Gaels were shut out.

Adding to the disappointment, not just for Queen’s but all the other teams in the league, surely is the fact that despite having seasons good enough to land them in the Yates Cup game Saturday, the futures look bright for the Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders, who led the league with five players each on the all-rookie team.

Carleton and Western each placed three players on the team.

To be eligible for the team, players must be true freshmen, in their first year at their respective institution. The players were chosen by the league’s coaches, from a list of nominees submitted by each team.

The conference’s rookie of the year, and Ontario’s nominee for the Peter Gorman Trophy as the outstanding first-year player in Canada, will be announced Thursday, with the other individual award winners, at a news conference in Hamilton.
