November 22, 2014

Rideau District Lions and La Salle Black Knights were both quarter-final victims at their respective Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls basketball tournaments Friday night.

At the single-A championship in Ingleside, Rideau was eliminated by a 50-36 defeat at the hands of North Bay Algonquin. La Salle, at the AA tournament in Kingsville, was defeated 47-33 by Guelph Centennial.

After falling behind 14-9 by the end of the first quarter, Rideau battled back and trailed just 35-32 going into the final period. The Lions were stifled in the final eight minutes, however, as they were outscored 15-4.

Leah Rice, with 11 points, Mykaela Mallette, with seven, and Abby Okum and Taylor Bresee, with six points apiece, were the top scorers as Rideau suffered its first loss at the tournament.

The Lions came home having won two of their three games. Algonquin heads to the semifinals 3-0.

In Kingsville, La Salle trailed 24-16 at halftime against fourth-seeded Centennial, then fell out of contention in a third quarter where the Knights were outscored 13-6. The loss was La Salle’s second in three games.

Earlier Friday, the Kingston Area champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers were also eliminated in the quarter-finals of the AAA tournament in Windsor, when they lost 49-43 to Sarnia Northern.
