Canadians to play for seventh place at Commonwealth Games field hockey tournament

July 31, 2014

Canada suffered its third defeat of the women’s field hockey tournament Wednesday in its final preliminary round match at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Canadians, with Kingston’s Kate Gillis as captain, trailed 3-0 at halftime and they were outshot 31-2 in the game by the world’s fourth-ranked team. Gillis had one of those shots in 51 minutes of playing time.

Canada, 1-3 in the preliminary round, will play Malaysia, 0-3-1, for seventh place in the 10-team tournament Thursday. Malaysia played Wales to a scoreless tie in its final round-robin game Wednesday.

Kingston’s other contribution to the Canadian team in Glasgow, Cleo Ncube, did not compete. Scheduled to compete in men’s 74-kilogram division of the Games wrestling tournament, Ncube had to withdraw due to injury. In his place, Chris Laverick was defeated 4-1 by 37-year-old Nigerian Melvin Bibo in Tuesday’s opening bout.
